In the sensitive contact with literary books, the main action repeated throughout the reading experience, which characterises a rhythm, is that of the gesture of turning pages. This action is necessarily executed by the reader multiple times, so that he can advance in reading a codex. Adopting a discursive and plastic semiotic approach, our objective is to outline some of the types of possible rhythms associated with the reading of literary books. By using different literary examples, we intend to show how the rhythm of the passage of pages can be related both to the plan of verbal content and to the plan of visual and spatial expression, i.e., to its graphic project.
