Semiotics of sports practices: styles of play - the example of rugby

Sports (just like games, of which they are variants) are the scene of multiple interactions. Harnessing the interactional model invented by socio-semioticians allows to bring to light three main points that this article will envisage in turn. We will first briefly propose a general typology of sports (essentially homologous to the famous categorisation established by Roger Caillois). Within that framework, we will then focus on one sport among others, namely rugby, in order to compare the specific playing styles that seem to be priviledged by different national teams (England, South Africa, France, etc.). Lastly, from a broader perspective including both football and rugby, we will envisage three stylistic sub-variants (Italian, Brazilian and French) belonging to a single interactional regime, that of adjustment, considered at the same time as a style of play and a lifestyle.
