The article proposes a general model of the work of the decipherer of disappeared writings and forgotten languages, starting from the decipherment of the Cuneiform script by Grotefend in 1802 and of the “Linear B” of Crete by Evans, Blegen, Ventris and Chadwick between 1901 and 1953, and then turning to the case of Champollion, whose operational procedures have never been examined and described. What is examined are the procedures with which the decipherer works, which Peirce’s inferential semiotics helps in a fundamental way to describe and understand, since the deciphering technique is an artisanal process based on chance and the intuitions of the decipherer, who invents solutions using the little certain knowledge at his disposal, guided however by a vast set of differentiated technical and specialized knowledge.
