Environmental Racism and the Young Lords

The Young Lords movement, formed in the early 1960s in the United States, played a key role in raising awareness about the environmental racism that affected the most vulnerable groups in American society. With actions to combat the lack of regular garbage collection that accumulated in the streets and lands of the Harlem neighborhood, especially in East Harlem where the Puerto Rican community was concentrated, the Young Lords drew the attention of the media to the problem Restroom. The mobilization against the health crisis through the action called “Garbage Offensive”, reflected the awareness of the environmental racism practiced by the public power against Puerto Rican immigrants in New York City.

Part of the Nordeste region of Brazil, it is called semi-arid due to its biophysical characteristic, droughts and a predominance of shrub and herbaceous tree species that classify it as the Caatinga biome. According to data from the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística - IBGE, the semi-arid region of the country contains a total area of 982,563.3 km², 89.5% of which is in the Nordeste region, extending to states such as Maranhão, and the State of Minas Gerais, located in the Southeast Region. The Nordeste has a long history of major droughts, according to Melo (1999) over the years and with the creation of new technologies, it became known that the occurrence of droughts in the Nordeste was linked to the El Niño phenomenon. El Niño and La Niña are climate phenomena that occur in the Pacific Ocean and affect the global climate. El Niño involves warming sea waters, while La Niña involves cooling. Both have significant impacts on weather conditions around the world and are closely monitored by scientists and climate experts. El Niño is a meteorological phenomenon on a global scale, resulting from the differentiated warming of the Pacific Ocean, causing changes in the atmospheric precipitation regime in various parts of the earth. In Brazil, there is a reduction in rainfall in the North and Nordeste regions, and an increase in the South region, in general, El Niño, although weak, in the year 1992-93, affected the lives of 8 million and 500 thousand people (DE MELO, 1999).

This research's main methodology is the bibliographical review of texts that report the effects of El Niño in the Nordeste, reaching the conclusion that the climate emergency is a completely red and dangerous sign in El Niño years. Finally, actions and projects that are operating in the Nordeste and that are thinking about how to adapt to the effects that El Niño may cause in the future are mapped. Furthermore, the main actors operating in the region are listed, aiming at the adaptation and safety of local communities in relation to climate change.

The article seeks to analyze and understand the socio-environmental situation of water present in Serra da Cantareira, which is located in the Atlantic Forest north of the city of São Paulo. Looking first at the historical perspective of occupation and formation of the region, it can be seen that the attention and care for the Reserve occurred entirely linked to the interest of water supply for the São Paulo region, more precisely in the North Zone where it is located. located in Serra da Cantareira. According to the perspective of political ecology, environmental injustice surrounding the development of the region is present in several situations as local populations are determined by the conditions of water control through dams and channelization of river courses.

This article rescues tortures practiced against political prisoners on the ship Raul Soares, anchored near the Port of Santos where he remained during 1964. The sources are memories recorded in the interviews produced by journalists, in the books, in the Report of the National Truth Commission (RCNV) with testimony by Thomas Maack, and a letter from political prisoners to the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), and photographs published in Santos newspapers. In order to carry out the analysis of the sources, we rely on authors who deal with orality as a source.

The article aims to map some caricatural representations of black people in the magazine “O 'Malho - RJ”, between the years 1920 to 1940, in order to identify the existence of racism in the way that black lines are made and related to them with the racial paradigms in force at the time.In this sense, concepts such as symbolic racism, recreational racism and the ability of cultural representations to be fundamental to the construction of the social imaginary were addressed throughout the text.

Freud and the Future of Civilization between Religion and Science

The present work aims to analyze and problematize Freud's main theses about culture and his ideas and bets for it's future. For this purpose, we used the 1927 essay, The Future of an Illusion, in constant dialogue with other texts, especially Civilization and its discontents. We conclude that for Freud the decisive key to maintaining the Western culture is the implementation of a scientific spirit in place of religious systems.

This article intends to analyze the strategies mobilized by black movement leaders as ways to face the conditions of social subsistence in the presence of the triple political, economic and health crisis. The research is based on the analysis of in-depth interviews with six state coordinators of the Movimento Negro Unificado. Through this study, we understand that hunger, state violence, and the perspectives of virtualization were the greatest challenges of the movement in this period, in addition to generating reflections about the future of the movement in this scenario that demands welfare and solidarity policies.
