This article addresses pseudonymy and heteronymy in the work of writer Romain Gary (1914-1980), in order to consider the psychic function of these phenomena. Born in Vilnius, Lithuania, of Jewish origin, Gary immigrated to France as a teenager. He was awarded twice the Goncourt Prize, once for a book published under the pseudonym Émile Ajar, which generated a great deal of controversy because, traditionally, the Goncourt can only be awarded once to an author. A brief foray into literary theory will be made to consider the notion of authorship, and then, in view of the writer's suicide, some Freudian notions will be used to verify the hypothesis that Gary's self-extermination coincided with the dysfunctional aspects of a process by which the writer simultaneously sought self-invention, recognition and anonymity.
