Abstract

In this article we analyze the attempts of the São Paulo industrial bourgeoisie to increase itspower during the early twentieth century. The Paulista industrialists articulated a group ofbusinessmen, engineers and professors to create an entity that could, in addition to representingtheir interests, systematize their ideas and disseminate them throughout society. Theorganization, standardization and rationalization of labor were themes that were part of thediscourse and the project of the rising industrial sector. To advance this project, in 1931 theycreated the Institute for the Rational Organization of Labor (IDORT), which was based on ataylorist framework and was intended to play the role of systematizing, defending and disseminatingthis project.
