Abstract

Thanks to popular mobilization and resistance, the Argentine province of Mendoza has succeeded in stopping numerous mega-mining projects, among them the Vale do Rio Doce Company. At the same time, the province has approved a law that prohibits metallic mega-mining in its territory. Despite multiple attempts to declare it unconstitutional, the law has been ratified on numerous occasions. The Popular Assembly for the Water of Mendoza has had a fundamental role in the environmental struggle in the province.
