Abstract

Paul Karl Feyerabend (1924-1994) was an Austrian physicist and philosopher widely known for his work Against Method (1975). Despite the notoriety of this “enfant terrible” of the philosophy of science (one of the nicknames he acquired due to his positions) arising from this work, the debates contained therein (and in his other works) have a rather curious origin: quantum mechanics. Being a physics graduate from the University of Vienna, the author’s initial 22 years of professional life revolved around quantum mechanics, particularly the versions elaborated by Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Wolfgang Pauli, Erwin Schrödinger, and Albert Einstein. From quantum mechanics, Feyerabend was able to experiment and structure themes that remained important to him throughout his life, such as realism, the relationship between physics and metaphysics, and the relationship between science and society, among others. This article aims to present how Feyerabend extracts and structures his discussions from this complex field, using direct quotes from the physicist-philosopher whenever possible, in order to better characterize his thinking. In this way, it is hoped that those unfamiliar with the author will gain a general overview of the tone of his discussions and how philosophical debates can be built upon quantum mechanics.
