The development of writing proficiency in English as an Additional Language (EAL) is a complex process that benefits from the use of digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), promoting learners' linguistic autonomy. This article is a bibliographic study on the implications of AI, focusing on ChatGPT, for writing learning in EAL. The objectives are: i) to identify how AI interferes with the development of writing in EAL and ii) to describe how ChatGPT can assist in improving writing skills in the language. Ethical issues, such as excessive reliance on AI and the protection of learners' data, are also discussed. The integration of ChatGPT is valuable but should be managed carefully to ensure the proficient development of writing skills.
