The article is both historical and conceptual. Based on Husserl’s critique of Brentano’s theory of intentionality, its goal is to make explicit the conceptual debate between these philosophers.
First, Brentano’s notion of intentionality is analyzed, along with his problematic explanation of the nature of the intentional object and its relation to the concepts of reality, thing, and existence.
Second, through a comparison and contrast between Husserl’s *Logische Untersuchungen* and *Ideen I*, his conception of intentionality and reference to the object is examined, as well as the complex articulation between the concepts of content, object as-how (*Objekt als Wie*), and object as such (*Objekt als solches*). These are later supplemented by the notions of noema, noematic sense, and pure X, in their relation to the object as such as a limit.
Third, drawing on recently published Husserlian manuscripts, the article presents references to Brentano’s theory of intentionality, Husserl’s proposal for a conceptual taxonomy of the multiple dimensions of intentionality (framed in terms of the intentional, the objectual, and the apparential), and his conception of the correlate of consciousness understood as reality (world), ultimately showing that everything refers back to intentional consciousness as the giver of meaning.
