Abstract

Commemorating the fortieth anniversary of the death of Michel Foucault has been rightly due, given how his work has been a catalyst of contemporary philosophy. Widely acclaimed internationally, his work has sparked a multitude of projects and research groups active in the fields of social sciences, humanities, and literature. His philosophy, though ambiguous in the most literal of senses, does not require its readers to identify with the logical and epistemological rigor of a philosophical system, let alone with philosophy per se. As a result, there has emerged nothing less than a mode of cultural production and circulation that we call Meta-Foucault Inc. In this article, we situate the genesis and structure of Meta-Foucault Inc. within the realm of contemporary French philosophy. Through its activities, we show how the most radical innovations in social knowledge arise from an industry productive of problematizations.
